Surreal Anatomy Drawings by Michael Reedy

Michael Reedy born in Galesburg, Illinois, is currently an Assistant Professor in Drawing at Eastern Michigan University. He received his MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University in 2000 and his BA from North Central College in 1996. His work has been included in over 100 national and international exhibitions and can be viewed in numerous private and institutional collections.

In my most recent works I have begun to explore visual complexity and ornamentation in conjunction with my prior interests; which have long been rooted in contemporary trends in figurative and portrait based works, as well as fringe images of the body, either in medical illustration or cartoons. I believe this push towards excess propels the figures in to another space and permits the psychological possibilities or fantasies of the figures (or those embedded in the narrative) to operates outside of normal spatial conventions, and in short become uncanny. In some respects my goal has been to make each new image more beautiful and self-indulgent than the last. via

As a young girl, artist Margaret Bowland‘s favorite books and songs told stories about love and live, stories that condition girls to expect certain things out of life and want to be a certain way. Ideas about love, beauty, and personal identity are at the heart of her 19th century-inspired oil paintings, covered here. In particular, her portraits often feature the same African American girl named “J”, grandly styled with her face painted white, and attended to by white servants. She makes a reappearance in Bowland’s upcoming exhibition at Driscoll Babcock in New York, “Power”.

The Fine Art of Marine Debris by Pam Longobardi

Pam Longobardi (b.1958) transforms oceanic marine debris into installations and photographic works. Her artwork involves also painting and addresses the psychological relationship of humans to the natural world. She currently lives and works in Atlanta and is Professor of Art at Georgia State University.

In 2006, after discovering the mountainous piles of plastic debris the ocean was depositing on the remote shores of Hawaii, I began collecting and utilizing this plastic as my primary material in my project called Drifters. Since then, I have made scores of interventions, cleaning beaches and making collections from all over the world, removing thousands of pounds of material from the natural environment and re-situating it within the cultural context for examination.

For me, plastic has come to stand for the heavy hand of human presence in every corner of the globe. It is the symbol of wanton and thoughtless production and consumption, a lazy and greedy sucking up of energy and resources at the cost of all other life on the planet.

More info: spazuk.com | Youtube | Facebook

Steven Spazuk is a Canada-based artist who uses candle soot to create elegant drawings. After depositing soot on his media with a candle or torch, he etches lines and patterns in the soot with  pencils and feathers.

Though Spazuk has spent the last 14 years developing and perfecting his soot painting technique, the creation process always has an element of random spontaneity and improvisation. via: boredpanda
